Which is the better musical instrument ? the valve or slide trombone ?
Which trombone is the better choice? the valve or the slide ?
I came to the valve trombone from playing the trumpet. Because I wanted to copy the way Nat King Cole sings. And It is a no brainer that Nat sings like a trombone. I love those big round notes !
also / coming from the trumpet mouth piece. The trombone mouth piece is SO! comfortable ! It is really nice.
Depends on what you want to do with it. A Slide Trombone gives you the flexibility of being able to play between the notes when you have to. A Valve Trombone gives you the sense of security that comes with pushing a button and getting the right note. There is a combination valve and slide Trombone (The Superbone) but it tends to be expensive and most of the people who have played one (that I know of personally) report that they are somewhat cumbersome.
I prefer a nice Bass Trombone with an F and D Attachment, or at least a Nice Tenor with an F Attachment. This gives me the luxury of choosing one or two ranges of notes in a convenient trigger, worked with my left hand. My right hand is free to work the slide and the increased range that the triggers (or even trigger) gives me, is more than worth the extra weight. (Which is focused at the center of the horn and does not severely inhibit it’s pivot point)
